North Stars prepare cold reception for Ice Wolves

Oct 30, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars are 0-1-2 over their last three games and will be hoping to negotiate their way back into the win column tonight, as the Stars welcome the La Ronge Ice Wolves to town.

La Ronge meanwhile, enters play having won two-straight, looking to build on their recent success.

MacGregor Sinclair and Matthias Urbanski co-led the North Stars in scoring through the first 16 games of the season, having accrued 22 points apiece. Ryan Gil, since joining the dynamic duo, has proven to be the perfect match for the offensive thoroughbreds, adding another 13 points through his first 16 games.

On the second line, Braydon Buziak is coming off quite possibly his best game of the season against Humboldt, which saw the former Western Hockey Leaguer put up a goal and an assist, featuring in on each of his team’s two goals. Elijah Loon-Stewardson is also coming off a multi-point effort, while Owen Lamb has scored three goals in his last four games.

Tanner Robin will get a chance to move up in the lineup tonight to play along with Brett Gammer and Regan Doig. This line will prove to be a formidable foe for any opposition defence, with all three players hoping to carry over their individual season-series success to date against La Ronge, that has seen the trio combine for four goals through their first three games against the Ice Wolves.

Dylan Esau will shift to centre tonight on the club’s fourth line, where he’ll be flanked by Kaden Boser and Logan Spence. A heavy but quick line, the trio offers a range of intangibles that should be fit specifically to thrive in an intense, fast-paced affair such as tonight.

On the blueline, defenceman Noah Form remains out with injury, but head coach, Brayden Klimosko said he believes the Saskatoon product is closing in on a return to the lineup.

“We’re getting close, we really are,” Klimosko said. “I think Form will be ready by the weekend; he’s been amped to go here for a while and just with the injury he had, he hasn’t been able to get cleared until that point.”

The coach added fellow defenceman Jacob Bayne might be closing in on a return in the near future as well.

In the meantime, the North Stars will continue to roll Tanner Scott alongside Stars’ rock, Cody Spagrud on a pairing that delivers plenty of punch defensively, while also bringing an aptitude for offensive contribution, as evidenced by the captain, Spagrud’s 13 points, placing him within the top five in defencemen scoring league-wide.

Matthew Fletcher was the staple on the Stars’ second pair this season, and will be joined tonight by Seth Summers. Together, the mix of defensive acumen, and elite play reading ability of Fletcher along with the pure skating talent of Summers, provide the Stars’ coaching staff with a go-to duo that can excel in any game situation.

Austin Shumanski, who played parts of two seasons with the Ice Wolves from 2016 to 2018, will no doubt supply his punishing defensive brand of hockey once again this evening, alongside the elusive agility of Adam Weiner.

Fans of the North Stars can catch all the action tonight at the NB Civic Centre and on 1050 CJNB. Pregame is at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
