WDM ready to scare tonight and tomorrow

Oct 29, 2018 | 5:00 PM

If you’re in for a scare tonight, WDM is the place to be.

The museum will be hosting their Fright Nights Haunted House, starting up at 7 p.m., running to 10 p.m. It’s generally a big event for the museum, which has on average around 500 people that go through each year over the two nights.

“We’ve been doing a Halloween event here at the Museum for at least 25 years,” Museum Manager Joyce Smith said. “We started with the haunted house, and then it morphed off into more of a family event. A few years ago we decided we wanted the adult haunted house back, so we started doing it again. We started in the village, and then moved it inside.”

Smith said every year that they’ve done this; they’ve received great community support. This year, they will be focusing on frightening phobias, and with their haunted house closed circuit videos, all the scares will be caught on camera. She explained how they came up with the idea.

“Everybody put in some suggestions, we threw it in a hat, and that’s what we pulled out,” she said. “We wanted to know what scares our people, what scares our workers. We figured if we were scared, then the general community would be scared.”

The haunted house is $10 per person, and runs tonight and tomorrow night, with an age restriction of 12 and over. Last year, they had great feedback on their Haunted Hotel theme. Smith couldn’t say much about what people should expect, but she did have a warning.

“Expect to be scared,” she said. “We encourage people to come in costume if they’d like, that’s fine. Come in, and be ready to be scared. Try to think of what scares you.”

What makes the event so unique is their set up after you run through the haunted house. They have a cocktail bar set up, Smith says, where you can sit back and relax and take a peak at others going through.

“We do have cameras inside some of the areas,” she said. “So you go through the haunted house, and then you go sit inside the cocktail bar, and you can watch other people going through the haunted house. It’s kind of a behind the scenes look at it. Nobody else does this.”
