N.B. hopes to work with town to create recreation master plan

Staff at the City of North Battleford hopes to work with the Town of Battleford to develop a comprehensive recreation master plan of all the parks, recreation facilities and services in the Battlefords.

North Battleford council approved the resolution at its recent meeting.

City Director of Leisure Services Cheryl DeNeire said it will be a joint plan to address “current and future recreational needs in both communities, and maximize outcomes, by including local and regional data, as well as maximize the use of tax dollars in both communities.”

She said the same resolution will also be coming to the Town of Battleford’s next council meeting.

DeNeire stated in her report the city and town have several facilities and infrastructure services used by both communities daily, so it would be more viable and cost efficient to work together.

It will cost about $100,000 to develop the joint master plan, with the city covering 60 per cent of the cost and the town 40 per cent, based on the proposal. The city will include this project in its 2019 budget approval process.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater said he believes the plan will be effective for future planning.

“It will identify all the assets for recreation, including parks, to develop a master plan together,” Bater said following council. “I don’t think we’ve ever undertaken this kind of initiative before. It’s very exciting, and one we’re looking forward to initiating.”
