North Stars on the hunt for success against Ice Wolves

Oct 17, 2018 | 2:00 PM

The Battlefords North Stars, are 2-1-1 to start October, and will enter Wednesday night’s game against the La Ronge Ice Wolves determined to propel themselves back onto the winning track after a tough 6-4 defeat to the Yorkton Terriers.

La Ronge on the other hand, is 3-3 through their first half of the month and will be hoping to snap a two-game losing streak that has seen the team’s offensive well all but dry up, with the club able to muster only a single goal in each of their last two games, being outscored 11-2 in the process.

For the North Stars, MacGregor Sinclair leads the team in scoring through the first 11 games, and enters play white hot, with six points over his last three games.

Sinclair will be joined on the top line, as per usual by the club’s leading goal scorer, in Matthias Urbanski, with seven goals on the year; and the California kid, Ryan Gil, who has in his own right, put up seven points through his last seven games.

Since being put together Oct. 12, the trio has combined for eight points in two games.

The second line, featuring Owen Lamb, Braydon Buziak and Elijah Loon-Stewardson will also remain intact tonight. The elder Loon Stewardson is coming off his first multi-goal game of the season, that saw him pick up his third and fourth tallies on the campaign.

Also coming off a two-point outing against Yorkton, is Stars’ forward, Austin Becker. Becker seems to have really hit his stride over the last couple of games, as he has become must-watch entertainment for North Stars’ fans, wowing the hometown crowd time and time again, seemingly every shift the 5’7 Wisconsin Wonder steps on the ice.

Embodying an innate killer instinct with the puck, Becker has proven deadly for the opposition when left alone with any kind of time and space to make a play. Perhaps no player knows that better than La Ronge goaltender, Jordan Frey, who was victimized on an Austin Becker breakaway tally the first time these two teams met, back on Sept. 23 at the league showcase.

In that game, Becker, playing in his fourth contest wearing the Stars’ black and silver, streamed in on net using his elusive tendencies and quick first step. He then let his unbelievable hands take over and slide the puck home, while in the process setting the hopeless netminder a-spin in the crease like an old record.

Becker will be joined by Regan Doig at center and Brett Gammer to the right. The Alberta connection of Doig and Gammer have also played some of their best hockey of late.

Kaden Boser, Tanner Robin and Qunitin Loon Stewardson on the fourth unit provide good wheels with a gritty edge, two skillsets that should factor in nicely in tonight’s matchup with the Ice Wolves.

On the blue line, Cody Spagrud and Tanner Scott will stare down the Ice Wolves’ best, while also providing some offensive snarl with the former, Spagrud, having already collected nine points through his first 11 games, good for fifth-most amongst defencemen league-wide.

Jacob Bayne, who made his return to the lineup off injury last game will move up tonight to play alongside his most frequent partner prior to injury in Matthew Fletcher.

Defenseman Adam Weiner will draw back into the lineup, shifting to the right-hand side of Austin Shumanski on the third unit, providing the Stars with natural puck-moving confidence and meat-and-potatoes defensive presence in one.

North Stars’ fans can catch tonight’s action at the NB Civic Centre or on 1050 CJNB with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
