Lawrence School launches Class of 2031 project

Oct 5, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Sporting their adult-sized graduation T-shirts, kindergarten students at Lawrence School were dressed for success Friday for the launch of the Class of 2031 project.

The project was first launched last year by Living Sky School Division in an effort to help students have a positive education experience, so they can go on to graduate high school one day.

The aim of Class of 2031 is to bring community leaders together to provide support for youth so they will have a better chance of enjoying success in the future.

Each student in the program was given a backpack from Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC the sponsor of the project in Lawrence School this year.

North Battleford business Bridges Chevrolet Buick GMC owner and dealer-operator Duane Lafreniere said the company agreed to sponsor the Lawrence School Class of 2031 this year to show its support.

“We’ve all got families at Bridges and we all had kids go through kindergarten,” he said.

He said all the staff at the company wanted to take part in the project.

“When I asked my staff if they want to get involved in this they were just as excited as me,” Lafreniere said.

Living Sky School Division board chair Ronna Pethick said she appreciates how many community organizations are supporting the project.

She said the Bridges staff will be getting to know the youth and spending time with their families and “playing an integral part in their achievement.”

Parents also attended the event as well as several RCMP officers and emergency responders to also show their support.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater also attended and spoke to the students. Bater said he attended Lawrence School when he was a child so he appreciates what the school has to offer.

“I’m here as the mayor to welcome the kindergarten class and to remind them of what a great community they are growing up in,” he said.

The Class of 2031 project will also be running in McKitrick School, Bready School and Connaught School this year.
