New program at Comp sees great results for athletics

A new program at the Comprehensive High School has been turning heads on the field.

The new junior boys soccer program started this season, and even though they haven’t been in a league this year, they’ve gone 4-0 in their exhibition schedule. The basis behind creating the program was building a foundation that hopes to grow in the future to a new soccer program.

Kat Huxley, coach for the team, told battlefordsNOW the players love the opportunity to try something new.

“They love it,” she said. “There’s a handful of players that haven’t played soccer before and have repeatedly said that they are having so much fun, that they’re so happy that they’ve got the opportunity to play a new sport that they wouldn’t have gotten the chance to do if it wasn’t a school sport. It’s been super positive from all of the players.”

The team has a mix of players with experience, and players that are brand new to the game. Currently, the Comp does have a girls soccer team set up in their athletics, but moving the sport over for the boys to play is something that the school hasn’t had. Their exhibition schedule has consisted of games against Meadow Lake, Lloydminster (E.S. Laird), the junior boys team from John Paul II and senior girls from John Paul II.

For Huxley, it’s all about creating the building blocks to have the athletics program grow and succeed.

“We’ve created this awesome foundation of kids who know how to play soccer, and kids who are new to soccer,” she said. “We were testing out the waters, hoping we could do well and build interest for next year as well.”

In moving to the future, Huxley has big goals for the program. Playing in high school athletics not only gives students an opportunity to balance their academic and athletic lives, but also a glimpse into their post secondary future. Huxley hopes that students grab the opportunity and run with it.

“It would be amazing to continue male soccer at the Comp, to give students different opportunities to play sports while in school,” she said. “A lot of the other high schools are (getting interest from University athletics), and hopefully we can get on the same page, as they have other students from other sports at the Comp that have had that opportunity.”

The team wraps up their season on Thursday against Meadow Lake at 4 p.m. at the North Comp Field.
