Battleford launching commemorative bench program

Oct 3, 2018 | 11:44 AM

Local residents who want to honour the life of a loved one may be interested in the Town of Battleford’s new commemorative bench program.

As discussed at council’s recent meeting, people can purchase a bench with a plaque bearing their loved one’s name, to be placed in a suitable location throughout the community.

“It was brought forth by some citizens who had seen it in other communities and in the media,” Mayor Ames Leslie said following the meeting. “The parks and rec. department and the parks and rec. director got together and devised a policy and an application to council to approve the ability for people to buy and sponsor benches that will be utilized inside the community to commemorate a loved one, maybe even somebody still alive that is significant in their life.”

Commemorative benches with a plaque can be purchased for $1,500 plus tax for the vinyl-coated model for green spaces and parks, or $2,500 plus tax for a metal model for walking trails and naturalized green spaces. The cost also covers the installation and concrete pad for the bench.

Since a commemorative bench purchase is considered a donation, people will receive a tax receipt for the cost. The town will not be making any profit on this project.

The town staff will collaborate with people purchasing a bench to determine a suitable location for the structure.

Each bench with a plaque may only be used to commemorate an individual, family or group. The town also reserves the right to refuse any application for any reason at its discretion.

Plaques must be a standard size of two-and-a-half inches by eight-and-a-half inches. Only one plaque is permitted per bench.

Each bench will have minimum guaranteed life of 15 years. If the bench needs to be replaced after that time the original sponsor will be notified and will have an opportunity to purchase a new bench for the same local. If the original sponsor wants to sponsor a new bench the cost will be 75 per cent of the cost of the bench including installation at that time.
