October a busy month for local Dekker Centre

The Dekker Centre saw plenty of concerts and events lately, and with singer, songwriter, Heather Rankin coming to town on Oct. 12, it looks as though things aren’t slowing down any time soon.

Kali Weber, general manager of the Dekker Centre, said she attributes the growing popularity of the community based entertainment centre to a hospitable atmosphere that naturally warrants a positive review from those who perform at the establishment.

“If one artist comes here and they have a great experience with not just our facility, but also our staff they’re going to tell their friends and other people,” she said. “Word of mouth is the most effective marketing tool there is.”

In addition to Heather Rankin taking the stage on Oct. 12, the Battlefords’ Performing Arts Mecca will continue to see musical performances weekly throughout the month. Oct. 18, husband and wife team, Whitehorse will offer their folk roots sound, and Oct. 26, Forever Country, will hit the stage; a musical conglomerate featuring five mega tribute acts, emulating the likes of Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Garth Brooks and Shania Twain.

Oct. 30, the centre will close out the month with a theatrical performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

Weber is confident that as long as the centre continues to attract fresh and entertaining acts, momentum will only continue to build for the organization moving forward.

“As long as we keep providing really excellent artists that people talk about and want to see more of, then the popularity [for the Dekker Centre] will grow, not just in our community but within the performing arts scene as well,” she said.

Looking at the upcoming Rankin concert in particular, Weber said the show fits in line with what her vision is for the Dekker Centre, being a place where community patrons from all walks of life can come together to enjoy themselves and be entertained.

“The more artists, like Heather, that [appeal to] a wide-variety of people, the better. I want to see all members of our community represented at each event at the Dekker Centre”

Weber said that an import aspect of supplying an entertainment hub for the community as a whole is finding ways to connect with, and supply acts who, younger audiences will take an interest in.

“One of my main goals is to get people of a younger demographic into the Dekker Centre,” she said. “Whether that be figuring out continued ways to market to people in their 20s and 30s and 40s, or we bring in people who appeal to that target market, those are two things that I am really committed to.”
