Light of Christ hopes new program will help students reach potential

Oct 1, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Light of Christ Catholic School Division administrators hope a new program will help students see better results by focusing on what they do best, rather than their weaknesses.

Director of Education Cory Rideout said this November high school students will be learning about the Clifton Strengths assessment to help them understand the multi-facets of their personalities. The program focuses on positive psychology. Students can learn how to apply their individual strengths so they can see better results in school and in life when they go on to pursue their career paths.

He said teachers learned about the Clifton Strengths assessment themselves as well, as part of their professional development work.

“We did a full day of basically an introduction to strengths,” Rideout said. “The whole premise is if as an individual you focus on what you’re good at instead of what’s wrong, then people will be more engaged, will be happier to come to work, and so on.”

The belief is the Clifton Strengths program will have a positive trickle-down effect on everyone involved with students, teachers and parents.

“The whole idea behind the strengths is that if the teacher knows their top five strengths and understands how to utilize them and become the best version of who they are, the kids can do the exact same thing,” Rideout said, adding this will help develop more supportive, caring relationships between the staff and the students, and parents as well.

Enrolment steady

When looking at numbers for the year, Light of Christ school division’s projected enrolment for the 2018-19 school year was on target.

The division projected 2,044 students when making its estimates in January, and as of Sept. 30, 2018 the actual enrolment number is exactly 2,044.

Rideout said it’s important to be as close to projections as possible so the division can budget accordingly, since enrolment is tied to funding received from the province.

Staffing needs met

Rideout said the division is fully staffed, and hasn’t experienced any shortages.

“Everything is fine,” he said. “Our French immersion program is fully staffed as well. We have no issues with our staffing.”

Budget funding as expected

The school division received added funding of $83,000 for the 2017-18 school year, from the $7.5 million in additional funding the province provided school divisions across Saskatchewan in early 2018.
For the 2018-19 school year Light of Christ school division received $19,957,000 in operating funding from the province.

“We made out where we thought we would be,” Rideout said. “It’s better than what we had in the past.”

He said the added funding that came in around March for the prior school year was also well received.
