North Stars stay hot, win third straight

Sep 29, 2018 | 12:50 AM

The Battlefords North Stars thrashed the Estevan Bruins Friday night 6-1 to win their third consecutive game. The victory also gives the North Stars a winning record on the season at 4-3.

After a scoreless first period that saw the North Stars come out flying, the team’s hard work paid off in the second, thanks to a terrific play defensively by offensive dynamo, MacGregor Sinclair.

Sinclair lifted the stick not once, but twice of the opposition defender exiting the Bruins’ zone, before stealing possession of the puck and in an all-in-one-motion, zipping a pass to a streaking Regan Doig rumbling into the offensive zone on his strong right-hand side.

Doig then drove to the goal with a defender hot on his trail. Matthias Urbanski, with his offensive senses tingling, shot up like lightning to join his linemate and made the rush a brief two-on-one. Just at the last moment, and almost as if in slow motion, the Olds, Alta., product, feathered a pass between the reaching defender’s stick and the desperate, lunging goaltender only to be put on a tee for Urbanski to knock home. For Urbanski, it marked his fourth goal of the season and fourth in his last five games.

The score would remain 1-0 for the home side for most of the period until Owen Lamb extended the Stars’ lead on an odd-man rush shorthanded.

Lamb blocked a shot in the defensive end and then chased down the ricocheted puck until ultimately, a mini 3-on-1 transpired. At that point, Lamb used his veteran savvy to look off the pass before firing a shot 14 inches stick-side to beat the goaltender under his arm and give the Stars an insurance marker.

Sinclair also got in on the scoring before the second period was over, potting his team-leading fifth goal of the year. Sinclair’s scoring play resulted from the forward picking up the puck in the offensive zone on the power play, walking it back to the blue line, and dancing through the slot, before taking his custom label maker out of his pocket and delivering the puck to exactly where he wanted. Sinclair’s shot hummed passed the goaltender, ringing off the far-side post and in.

Estevan, determined to get themselves back into the game, answered back in the third, thanks to a Tanner Manz goal coming after the Bruins’ only shift that saw them really establish any kind of significant offensive zone pressure in the game.

Estevan’s tally, however, would quickly be forgotten about by the Stars’ faithful at the Civic Centre just over two minutes later, thanks to Cody Spagrud’s first goal of the season off a shot from in tight after the defenseman joined the offensive attack.

North Battleford’s own Logan Spence would crack the game wide open at the 12:57 mark with his first goal of the year, which also marked the first tally of his SJHL career. The two birthday boys on the night, Shaye Sommerfeld and Tanner Robin claimed the helpers on the play.

Matthias Urbanski would also score his second of the contest with just over three minutes left to play in regulation, pulling the second-year vet into a tie with Sinclair for most goals on the team. Regan Doig and Logan Spence assisted Urbanski’s second marker to cap off the night.

The North Stars will now get some time to rest and regroup before flipping over their calendars and getting back to work Oct. 4 against the defending league-champion, Nipawin Hawks.
