North Battleford City Hall had some good news at its recent council meeting. The 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games made a positive impression on the community, not only in spirit, but also financially.

The Saskatchewan Winter Games Committee – North Battleford gave a presentation to council Monday on the outcome of the event, which ran from Feb. 18 to 24 in the North Battleford area.

Games co-chair David Schell said “the business community stepped up very nicely, and individuals in volunteering,” in supporting the Games.

Schell said a balance of $221,553 from the Games was available for the endowment.

The Games Committee recommended placing all of the funds in the Endowed 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games Fund with the Battlefords and District Community Foundation. Four per cent of the endowed fund will be granted each year to eligible community sport and recreation clubs, organizations, and individuals in need of near-term funding.

Games co-chair Rob Rongve told council the funding will be a great boost to sport for the future.

“We think this will help keep the legacy of the Games alive, now and for many years to come,” he said.

The Games Committee also indicated that potentially, a portion of the funding could be used for the Civic Center replacement, once the city is eventually ready to proceed with that project.

Ultimately, it will be up to city council to decide.

Mayor Ryan Bater said the Games Committee and the event itself put the Battlefords on the map.

“We can’t say enough good things about the Saskatchewan Winter Games,” he said following council. “It came at a perfect time in this community. It engaged a lot of people, a lot of volunteers, and a lot of businesses … It not only elevated the internal community pride but it elevated the profile and reputation of the city, provincially as an event-hosting superpower,” said Bater.
