Big Brothers Big Sisters Day recognized in North Battleford.

Sep 18, 2018 | 10:00 AM

Today marks the second-annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Day in the Battlefords.

The festivities got underway at 9 a.m. Tuesday with a “Paint the town purple,” event, in which staff and volunteers within the Big Brothers Big Sisters organization visited different establishments throughout the community that have contributed to the youth mentoring organization and decorated their front-entryway purple as a way of visibly showing their support for the Big Brothers Big Sisters contributions to the community.

Renee Sperling has been program coordinator for Big Brothers Big Sisters the Battlefords for the last three years. She said the idea of painting the town purple is to help raise awareness and get people talking about the organization throughout the Battlefords area, while also showing appreciation from the group to businesses that have lent their support over the last number of years.

“We’ve tried to figure out some ways we can sort of recognize all the people that have helped us get to this point and that’s where Paint the Town Purple came up,” Sperling said. “Letting people know the different businesses that have helped bolster us to where we are now, serving more youth than we have in the last probably 10 years.”

Last year the city of North Battleford officially proclaimed Big Brothers Big Sisters Day for the first time ever, a move that Sperling said was extremely beneficial.

“A lot of people were visiting the website, coming into the office, stopping us on the street and just asking a little bit more about the program,” she said.

This year, the decorating started at City Hall and will carry on throughout the city of North Battleford to various businesses that have lent a hand to the Big Brothers Big Sisters, in whatever capacity, from financial support to volunteering.

Sperling said residents who would like to show their support for the organization and help celebrate the second-annual Big Brothers Big Sisters Day, can feel free to get in on the action and decorate their own entryways purple as well.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is a non-profit organization that provides youth in the community with a mentor to spend time with. To learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters the Battlefords, visit their website or search them on Facebook.
