Flat track racing event to feature Wall of Death performance

Sep 7, 2018 | 12:27 PM

Flat Track Racing will be back in North Battleford this weekend and will feature a special Wall of Death performance this time around.

Kevin Jones from the Canadian Legion of Riders which is the event organizer said the event will run throughout Saturday and Sunday whereas in previous years it was held for one day.

“The second day was added because we’ve had more classes,” Jones said. “It will be too big an event to hold it in one day.”

Jones is excited about having the special performance as a new attraction.

“A local stunt rider will be doing the Wall of Death for an added feature,” he said, adding the event will take place around 2 p.m. or 3 p.m., Saturday. “That’s brand new. That originated in the ‘40s, …. when a motorcycle stunt rider rides his motorcycle through a flaming wall of fire. It’s a long-standing tradition in the flat track scene.”

As another highlight of the event, the pits at the show will be open to the public attending, at half-time both Saturday and Sunday.

“They can go and see what the motorcycles look like, and talk to the racers – a meet and greet,” Jones said.

He said he is looking forward to seeing about 50 racers taking part in flat track racing this year, coming from all over western Canada.

The event will include 14 heats of various racing classes, including categories for women’s races also.

Riders need to be 13 years of age and over to race in the main event. There is also a separate competition on a smaller track for youth aged 12 and under.

There will also be what’s known as a Hooligan class featuring what are known as “street motorcycles,” among the events.

Jones said people attending can expect to see up to 100 different motorcycles racing throughout the day.

“Most of these guys are racing for the Western Canada Points Series,” he said. “We are not involved in that but we are giving away trophies for first, second and third place in each class. The trophy winners will be announced at 5 p.m., Saturday.

The flat track racing event will take place at the grandstand at the exhibition grounds from 1 p.m. to about 4 p.m., Saturday, and from 11 a.m. to about 2 p.m., Sunday.

Sunday’s action will include a “Dash for Cash” event, with prizes given out at 3 p.m.
