Golf and curling come together at the Inaugural Swing and Slide Classic

The first-ever Swing and Slide Classic is coming to the Battlefords.

Ian Naismith, who was one of the minds behind the event, said the idea came about as a way of connecting the competitive and non-competitive curlers in the region.

“At the curling rink we had to decide on some events to try and bridge the gap between the high performance training centre and our regular curling season, so some of the club members came up with this idea,” he said. “[Tournaments like this one have] been done at other places and we thought it would be a fun way to kind of wrap up the golf season and kick-start the curling season, so it’s a curling bonspiel and golf tournament combined.”

Naismith said that he was one of four people who brainstormed the idea, attributing the inspiration to a similar event that used to take place in another Saskatchewan town just over two hours down the Trans-Canada Highway.

“It was our curling club manager, Doug Flash, myself, and two-other members of the club who are also avid golfers who organized the event,” Naismith said. “We kind of brainstormed together and modeled it after an event that used to take place in Outlook.”

Naismith saie there are no restrictions or pre-requisites when it comes to sign-up for the tournament.

“It’s open to everybody, and it’s meant to be fun,” he said. “You can be of any gender, age, ability; It’s not about the winning or losing, it’s about getting out and having some fun, enjoying some time with your friends,” he said.

Naismith also explained the scoring system that will be used for the event.

“For the golf, points will be given for birdies and pars, and the [idea is the] same in the curling,” he explained. “You’re not going to score like in traditional curling. You don’t get points for the number of rocks, you only get one point for each end you win.”

At the end of the weekend, each team’s total number of points will be combined between the golf and the curling to determine the winner.

The event also includes a banquet on Saturday night.

“We are going to have a supper with possibly some entertainment as well on Saturday evening at the golf course right after the round of golf is done,” Naismith said.

The Swing and Slide Classic will take place Sept. 14 to 16.
