Local Entrepreneur gives back to Humane Society

A local entrepreneur and animal lover is giving back to the Battleford’s Humane Society.

Janelle Youst originally started making wooden signs to help pay for her college tuition, but in August she changed her sign business to help give back to the local community. “Rustic Signs by Janelle” partnered with the Battlefords Humane Society to donate 50 per cent of the proceeds from her specially-made signs to their shelter fund.

Youst told battlefordsNOW that she feels it is important to support the humane society.

“I have my own dog that I rescued,” she said. “I’ve had her for about two and a half years now. I just thought how lucky I was to have her and how much adopting her impacted her life and my life. I decided I wanted to give back to the community a bit, I decided to go with the animal shelter for that reason.”

The signs only cost $10, but Youst took it one step forward when pricing out her signs for the Humane Society. If people pay $20 or more for her signs, 100 per cent of the proceeds go directly to the shelter. Youst says this isn’t the first time she’s done signs for pet owners, however.

“I sold signs previously custom for pet owners, that’s where my three designs came from,” she said. “The three design themes are “Home is where my dog is”- and you can substitute that to any pet- “You can’t buy love, but you can rescue it,” and “Love is four paws and a heartbeat.”

For Youst, it was an easy decision to go with the Humane Society. Being able to see it first-hand is huge for her, and the experience she’s had with her dog, Kaycee, made all the difference. She knows how important rescue dogs are and how much of a difference they can make in people’s lives, including her own.

“I enjoy helping them out, they’re so appreciative, it makes such a difference,” she said. “Quite often I stop by and check out the animals. I often say to people with my dog that I may have adopted her, but she rescued me. I think that’s something that rescues can give to families that are searching for a pet.”

The signs can be purchased at the Humane Society.
