Town reminds residents school zone speed now 30

The Town of Battleford once again wants to advise residents of newly reduced speeds for school zones and playground areas, especially going into the new school year.

Mayor Ames Leslie said all the school zones and playground zones are now posted at 30 kilometres per hour, adding that the signage went up last week.

When using 25th St., which has changed into a one-way street between Second and Third Ave., parents accessing Battleford Central School can briefly park their vehicles on the school-side of the road only, near where the teachers’ parking lot is located, when they are picking up and dropping off their children.   

The other side of 25th Street at this location, closest to the residences, will be strictly for residential permit parking only, year round.

Leslie is asking parents to remain in their vehicles to pick up and drop off their children so the process goes as smoothly as possible, to allow room so other parents have the opportunity to do the same.

“Between the RCMP and the public safety officer, they will be helping remind people of the changes,” Leslie said. “There will be an adjustment period for people to get used to the new speed zones, the new one-way street, and different changes within the school zones.”

Leslie said the town will be staying in contact with the local Living Sky School Division school board to see if any further changes need to be made.

He said the school division previously sent letters to parents, and all people affected would have been advised of the changes.

The town’s Public Safety Officer Al Manibal said the reduced speeds for the school zones and playground areas in town will be in effect year-round and will help improve safety.

He added signage will be in place and he will also be available in case anyone needs more information.   

“We will be on-site at the beginning of the school year – educating the teachers, the students and the parents on the traffic flow, and how everything is going to work,” Manibal said.
