100 Women Who Care the Battlefords coming soon

Aug 30, 2018 | 5:41 PM

100 Women Who Care the Battlefords first began in 2016.

Stacey Caldwell has been involved with the organization since it first came to the Battlefords and explained what the committee is all about.

“100 Women Who Care the Battlefords is a group of women who get together four times a year to raise money for local charities.”

Each member of the committee has the opportunity to nominate a charity of their choice, to be entered for the chance to take home the grand prize donation of $100,000 in donations.

Stacey and her husband Terry are the owners at Empress Flooring in North Battleford and host the event with food services provided from their restaurant, Porta Bella, because they believe the atmosphere of the evening can really enhance the experience.

“We’ve tried to create a really nice evening out for women, to make it a special event,” Stacey said. “A lot of women get all dolled up, come out with their friends and make it a whole evening event they can have fun with.”

Caldwell said each member of the 100 Women Who Care committee can nominate a charity within a 50-mile radius to be entered to potentially win the grand prize.

Of all the organizations nominated, three are randomly selected and given five to eight minutes to present their case to the 100-plus women, and tell why their cause should receive the donations.

At the end of the night members vote for the charity they believe should receive the donations and everyone’s cheques are made out to the organization who receives the most votes.

Ronnie Zakresky is on the steering committee, and brought the idea to the Battlefords area after being part of the organizing group who helped run the event in Saskatoon. She believed it would be a great opportunity in the Battlefords region as well.

“I actually brought the idea to the Battlefords,” Zakresky said. “I had been on the steering committee with the group in Saskatoon, and I just felt that it would be a great fit for the Battlefords, bringing women together and strengthening the community.”

Although the title says 100 women, the committee is far from exclusive, with no cap on membership. In fact, coming to a close on only their second year in the Battlefords, membership has already exceeded the 100 mark.

“It’s open to anyone who would like to join us, and we encourage people to come and take part in the evening to determine if they would like to become members,” Zakresky said. “We are upwards of 130 women currently, and hoping more will join us.”

Zakresky said the best part of the committee is the multiple benefits there are to both the people who become part of it, and the charities and organizations it helps.

“It’s a win-win situation,” she said. “It’s designed for those who may not have a lot of time to volunteer with different agencies and charities in the community, but they can attend our community which is kind of like a ladies’ night. There is an opportunity to socialize and network, and build that camaraderie, while also making an impact in the community.”
