Family-owned golf course celebrating 10 years

Aug 29, 2018 | 12:00 PM

A  long-running locally-owned business in North Battleford started as a family hobby but has turned into something more.

The Rustic Nine Golf Course will be celebrating its 10th anniversary Saturday. Elaine Liebaert said she and her husband Victor want to thank the community for their support, and will be giving away free hot dogs and drinks to everyone who comes out to golf on Saturday. There will also be prize giveaways for the closest-to-the-pin competition and reduced rates throughout the day.

The course is located just northeast of North Battleford.

Liebaert recalled how the golf course started as a family project and grew from there.

“In our backyard, we used to have cattle graze. Once the cattle were sold, we decided to put some holes in and golf as a family,” she said.

She said eventually they decided to open the golf course as a community attraction.

Liebaert said The Rustic Nine also tries to give back wherever they can. The family has been donating the use of the course each year for the Brian Maunula Memorial Jr. Golf Tournament fundraiser, now in its third year. The event is coming up again on Sept. 23.

“We’re pleased to be able to host it and raise funds for the Children’s Hospital Foundation in Saskatoon,” Liebaert said. “It’s a pleasure to see those children out there raising money for other children.”

Liebaert said it is important for her family to support the community, just as the community supports The Rustic Nine golf course.

“We just feel we are honoured that people come here, because it’s family-owned,” she added. “We feel we belong to the community, and everybody should give back.”
