Community fun at the 2018 Fin Island Trail Run

Aug 24, 2018 | 5:00 PM

The 2018 Fin Island Trail Run gets underway tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.

Jes Kohut, who along with her four friends has organized the event the last decade, said the whole thing started pretty unassumingly.

“Ten years ago I was part of a project called Always in Motion,” Kohut said. “It was just a group of people who wanted to get healthy and start exercising a little bit more, and basically we wanted to celebrate [the participant’s] accomplishments by giving them a trail run.”

Kohut said as the Trail Run got underway in its inaugural year, people enjoyed their time enough that a group of them decided to make it an annual event. Since then it’s become more recognizable.

“This year has been our biggest year as far as online registrations goes, so I think we’re getting the word out more and doing more promotion that way,” she said. “One thing that we have added over the years is that because we are a free race, it gives us an opportunity to give non-profit organizations a chance to fundraise during our Trail Run so that’s really developed over the years.”

People may be surprised to find just how many participants take part in the Trail Run on a yearly basis. Kohut said the number may already be in the hundreds, but it’s still trending up. Right now there are over 270 people with roughly 10 volunteers.

“It’s just the core five of us who run it, but then we get really good volunteers that come and help us out every year too,” she said.

The Fin Island Trail Run is open to all ages and is free to attend.
