Starting the academic year with the right mindset

Aug 23, 2018 | 10:45 AM

With the school year nearly here, it’s important that students start the year on the right foot according to a local teacher.

The 2018-19 academic year starts just after the September long weekend, but preparing for day one is important for all students. Going in to the new year always presents new goals, aspirations, challenges, experiences and hope.

Michelle Sack, a math teacher at North Battleford Comprehensive High School told battlefordsNOW that having a negative mindset coming into the school year will affect students overall performance.

“It’s a positive mindset that you have to go in with,” she said. “Everything’s a new experience; you have to go in with that idea that there are positive things for the new school year. Whether it being getting involved in the school community or the community at large. They have to have that idea to get out and go and do something.”

There are a number of student groups that these young minds can engage themselves with, whether its student council, athletics, various groups or just volunteering in the community. Sack mentioned the idea of setting goals and working toward them to give students something to strive for, regardless of the size.

“We can’t achieve anything if we don’t have an idea with where we want to go,” she said. “Even if it’s as small as being on time everyday or making sure your homework is done, that larger goal of where I’d like to see myself after high school is very important.”

Moving into the year, it’s important to ask a variety of questions, whenever they do come up. Sack reiterated that there are always open ears for students that may be struggling with any issue, no matter how big or how small.

“Lots of the teachers are very open to talk to you about what classes you need or what goals you may have, making sure you’re starting off on a good note,” she said. “There are a lot of people in the building that are there to listen. We have lots of career counsellors, school counsellors, lots of people in the building with that friendly ear to help you out.”

Registration day at the North Battleford Comprehensive High School is on September 4, where students can come in, ask questions, get their schedules, plan their year out and figure out where their classes are.

“Every year is a new year,” Sack said. “There’s always that excitement and that positivity going into a new school year that there are going to be great things that happen. You have to go with that every day.”
