Local project looks after pets

When you’re in an accident, or injured, there is one part of your family that sometimes gets overlooked.

Pet Owners Emergency Kit is a brand new service, started in the Battlefords, to ensure that your pets are safely taken care of in the event of an emergency. The service registers your pets, and information is placed in your wallet to contact to check up on your pets to ensure their safety.

Owner and Creator Lynn Appelt told battlefordsNOW where the idea came from, and why she felt a need for the kits.

“Just recently in the news, there have been a few incidents that really caught our attention,” she said. “There have been instances that pets have been in the vehicle. Once it came time to rescue and of course no one knew there were pets in the vehicle, so they ended up going missing.”

The kits are complete with bumper stickers, window decals, a key chain, and an emergency contact card. Appelt said that they recently had an incident in their family in which their pets were overlooked. She knows first hand the feeling of being in that one track mindset, and the feelings they had when they realized their furry friends were overlooked.

“It’s not that they’re less important,” she said. “But when you’re in an emergency, you don’t think, you act. The kits are developed to let people know that there are animals in the mix and it is designed for emergency personnel to look inside your wallet and see your emergency contact to look after your family.”

The kits just launched earlier on in August at Territorial Days in part with the Battlefords Humane Society, which is where they are being sold. Forty per cent of all proceeds of the emergency kits will be donated back to the Humane Society’s fund to build a new shelter, something that is needed, Appelt said.

The biggest thing with the Pet Owners Emergency Kits at this time isn’t about profiting on the project, but raising awareness about the issue, Appelt said.

“People haven’t thought about stuff like this yet. A lot of this is bringing awareness to people that people don’t always think about the pets that are waiting at home for us or are in the vehicle being transported with you,” she said.

Appelt believes that her next step for the project is focusing on creating a home kit, in case of an emergency such as a fire or health emergency, as well as personalizing and customizing the kits for owners’ specific needs.
