Organizers planning big Pride Week celebration in Battlefords

Aug 17, 2018 | 5:00 PM

Plans for the 2018 Battlefords Pride Week festivities are all set to go.

Organizers said events will take place each day during the week in the Battlefords, with the parade set for Aug. 25 in North Battleford.

Kelly Waters, one of the event organizers, said to start off the week, the City of North Battleford will have a Pride flag-raising ceremony at 10 a.m., Monday outside city hall to recognize the event.

“I’m so excited,” Waters said. “So many people have come together, and shown support. Hopefully, there is a good turnout. A lot of people have ‘liked’ the event on Facebook.”

Following the flag-raising event, there will be a community barbecue in the parking lot on 100 St. at 12 Ave., at around 11 a.m., Monday as a fundraiser for Pride.

Waters said a number of local businesses have also stepped up help support the 2018 Pride week events and make a donation.

On Wednesday after 7 p.m., there will be a get together for Pride supporters at Porta Bella Restaurant’s Downstairs Bar, with an open mike event planned.

“It will be an easily way for people to gather and have fun,” Waters said.

Then, on Thursday at 7 p.m. in Battleford at the downtown park a local band will be performing from 7 to 9 p.m.

On Friday at midnight at the Capital Theatre in North Battleford people can attend a screening by donation to see the film Love, Simon.

Other events during the week include activities all-day on parade-day Saturday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. for Pride Fest.  There will also be a stage set up outdoors downtown with live music for people to take in.

Then, on Sunday, at the Library in N.B. from 2 to 5 p.m. people can attend an event to hear some guest speakers for Pride Week.

For the Pride parade on Saturday, Waters said the event will start at 1 p.m. at Central Park near the N.B. Library this year. People need to gather at 12:45 p.m. if they wish to participate in the walk.

Participants will walk along 100 St. before returning to 19 Ave., then returning back to the park area.

Waters said she is hoping for a good turn-out for Pride.

“Last year there was more than I would have expected,” she said. “Lots of people, even if they don’t want to come to the street celebration, (have been asking) when is the walk.”

More details on the event will be available on Battlefords Pride Week 2018 Facebook Page.
