Light of Christ excited for another year of school

Aug 6, 2018 | 8:00 AM

The first day of school is only a month away, and students, parents, and educators alike are gearing up for another year.

Schools will be back in session after the September Long Weekend, with teachers back the week prior. The 2018-19 year is gearing up to be a major one for Light of Christ Catholic School Division, with different programs being implemented across the division to help bolster students learning abilities.

Director of Education Cory Rideout said he’s excited for another school year, and told battlefordsNOW some of the things people should know heading up to the big day.

“You want to get your back to school supplies ready to go,” he said. “For young kids and families, make sure your daycare situation’s figured out and get ready to come back and be engaged at school.”

Rideout said knows students will be excited and full of energy heading into their initial classes to kick off the school year.

“The first week is busy; a lot of opening day activities, kids will be outside a lot,” he said. “For our schools we’ll have mass, so kids will be walking to church and will be outside. All of our staff are educating our kids to be careful and to use crosswalks; some of our younger kids are impulsive though. Just slow down and keep an eye out all the time, but even more for the first couple weeks of the year.”

The school division will be focusing a lot on becoming a strength-based organization, Rideout said. They are engaging their staff in finding their top five strengths through professional development days, and the students’ strengths will also be assessed moving forward. This initiative has been a couple years in the works, Rideout said.

“If there’s one thing that we will focus on this year for us is relationships with our strength work, but also attendance,” the director of education said. “The message to parents would be make sure your kids get to school and we’ll do our best to engage them and get them what they need when they’re here.”
