Street Fest artists inspire audiences with unique talents

Under mostly sunny skies, the North Battleford International Street Performer Festival continued Saturday, drawing visitors downtown for a variety of entertainment.

Fifteen performance acts were scheduled for this year’s two-day festival.

Cassandra Stinn and Sean Kirk, a Saskatoon duo better known as Helika, thrilled festival goers with their acro-yoga show Saturday.

“It’s partnered acrobatics, a little bit of dance, and mostly a focus on connection and play,” she said.

Stinn became interested in the art after attending a show by Saskatoon group SaskAcro about five years ago.

“It just caught my eye immediately because I weight-lift and I’m a musician,” she said. “It was this beautiful fusion of strength and art. So I signed up for some classes with SaskAcro and have been doing it obsessively ever since.”

Steve Stergiadis, who calls his act The Devil in Disguise, captivated crowds Friday and Saturday by juggling and completing some difficult routines on his hybrid bike-unicycle. Stergiadis also infused a little comedy into his act.

“I started off as a juggler,” said the Toronto-based performer. “Then, I was interested in hat juggling.”

Stergiadis went on to train at a circus school in Germany and learned how to use a “circus bike” as well.

He then started working on his clown routine and decided to put all three routines – juggling, riding a “circus bike” and a touch of comedy – together.

Stergiadis said he loves performing because he enjoys the audience interaction. He said he travels a lot performing in street festival shows and enjoys the freedom of being his own boss on the road.

“You get to travel around the world, see nice places, meet interesting people and express what you really like to do,” Stergiadis said. “It’s nice to see what comes out of your training, and when the audience shows appreciation for it then that’s really nice.”
