Street Festival grand opening celebration set for Friday

Jul 26, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Battlefords residents and visitors will want to take in the opening celebration of the fifth annual North Battleford International Street Performer Festival, which is planned for Friday and Saturday.

Co-chair Kali Weber said the opening event will take place at 12:30 p.m. Friday near Dejma’s Curry House at 1183 101st St. in North Battleford. The street festival itself will start at 11 a.m.

In past years Weber said organizers held a special launch Tuesday, but this year decided to invite the local officials to speak on behalf of the festival at a ceremony at the start of the event instead.

“It’s great to have government support in any capacity,” she said.

There will also be a special pancake breakfast hosted by the Snack Shoppe from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on both Friday and Saturday.

“It’s to bring families down since we haven’t had the festival start at 11 a.m. before on a Friday,” Weber said.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater, Battleford Mayor Ames Leslie, a local Elder, and Battlefords MLA Herb Cox will take part in the opening ceremony, giving prayers and greetings.

Bater said the Street Festival is an incredibly important event for the Battlefords, which will be a great opportunity to showcase the city. The mayor said he expects to see many visitors attending the event.

“I remember when this was a new event; it was something that we had never seen before,” he said. “The street performer festival is still the only street performer festival in the entire province. It’s still special in that regard.”

The North Battleford festival won the Saskatchewan Tourism Awards of Excellence’s Community Event of the Year award In April of 2016.

The festival will feature performances by 15 artists including local rap singer Yung-C as well as international artists.

The event will run July 27 and 28 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. The location of the festival will be between 11th and 12th Ave. on 101st St.
