Street Festival gearing up for big start Friday

Jul 23, 2018 | 12:00 PM

The North Battleford International Street Performer Festival kicks off this Friday with performances by 15 artists including local rap singer Yung-C.

Co-chairs Janaye Chubb and Kali Weber have been busy helping organize the project.

“We’re very excited for this year,” Chubb said. “It’s our fifth year so we’ve built up to this and it’s amazing to see everything come together.”

The street festival will run two days this year on Friday, July 27 and Saturday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both days. The location of the event will be between 11th and 12th avenues, on 101 Street.

“We’re a block or two south from last year but we’re really excited to be set up where we are — out front of all the downtown businesses on the new beautiful downtown streetscape,” Chubb said.

Weber said people attending can look forward to see a wide range of entertainment. Local rap singer Yung-C is new this year and boasts a positive message.

Some of the other highlights include JOHNman coming all the way from Berlin, Germany, considered one of the best known living doll artists in Germany.

One of JOHNman’s characters is called Blanko.

“He dresses all in white and sets out painting supplies all around him,” Weber said, adding guests are invited to paint him. “It should be really cool to have that, not only as an interactive activity but also to watch and paint on a living artist.”

Some of the other acts likely to draw a crowd include two duos from Saskatoon — hula hoop performers Spinja & Arcana, and Helika, an acro-yoga act.

Weber describes Helika as a blend of movement, dancing and yoga.

There will be something for everyone’s tastes at this year’s street festival, the organizers said.

“If it’s your first time you can expect to stay downtown for about two hours to enjoy something to eat, watch two if not three different acts, and interact with some roving characters,” Weber said. “Bring a lawnchair, something comfy to sit on.”

People attending are also encouraged to leave tips for the artists they enjoy at the event.

The Street Performer Festival’s full list of performers can be found on the event’s website and Facebook page.
