Town looking at future of former St. Vital Church

There will be no museum at the old St. Vital Church.

The Town of Battleford discussed the condition of the historic church at its recent budget meeting and noted the structure was too costly to upgrade.

“Based on the engineer’s study that was done, it was very expensive to look to fix that old St. Vital Church up,” Mayor Ames Leslie said following the meeting.

The town looked at the possibility of leasing the former St. Vital Church building, located at Central Avenue and 20 St. W., to the Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Association.

The organization also expressed an interest in the possibility of turning the building into a museum to display its collection of artifacts related to land survey history in the province.

The Saskatchewan Land Surveyors Association is now looking at the former Land Registry building, located near the site of Old Government House in the Battleford area, as a possible site for the museum in the future instead.

In the meantime, Leslie said the question remains about the future of the former St. Vital Church since the structural integrity of the building is a concern.

“Council will need to look to if they want to spend money, or if they just want to let the church go and inevitably tear [it] down.

It was one of the original Catholic churches, and it was definitely the original St. Vital Church in the community,” he said. “So I think there is some emotional attachment to it.”

A priest remains buried under the altar in the church, and there are some artifacts in the church that will need to be preserved which was mentioned during council.

The mayor said now council will next have to consult with the public to determine what the community wants for the future of the building. Leslie added the building hasn’t been used in many years.

The church is listed as a Municipal Heritage Property, dating back to 1883.
