Man accused of stealing vehicle arrested after setting himself on fire

May 7, 2018 | 5:04 PM

Warman RCMP made a high risk arrest after investigating a suspect who set himself on fire last weekend.

On Saturday, May 5, Warman RCMP searched for a stolen vehicle reported to be driving erratically on Highway 16. The vehicle travelled at high speeds.

Mounties, along with Saskatoon Police Service Air Support tracked the vehicle and eventually tried to stop it with spike belts. One civilian vehicle unrelated to the investigation was damaged.

The suspect’s vehicle wound up in a farmyard North of Langham where the suspect tried to steal fuel. He then allegedly rammed an RCMP cruiser before fleeing the yard.

After a short pursuit, the driver became stuck in a field. Police say he then exited the vehicle, poured gasoline on himself and set himself on fire.

Officers hosed the suspect with a fire extinguisher. The vehicle was destroyed and the suspect suffered from minor injuries. No one else was injured in the event.

After the suspect received medical attention, he was taken into custody.

Terrance Albert Morin, born 1981, was charged with failure to stop for a peace officer, arson, assault on a peace officer, theft under $5,000 and breaching his conditions.

He is scheduled to appear in Saskatoon Provincial Court on May 9 at 10 a.m.
