Best Restaurant with Best Wine List: Porta Bella Restaurant

Nov 21, 2017 | 1:41 PM

Locals and visitors alike have been enjoying culinary excellence, friendly service and attention to detail for more than 18 years at Porta Bella Restaurant, which is why it’s no surprise the business has been named as the Best Restaurant with the Best Wine List for the 2017 Best of the Best Awards.

But far from happy to rest on their laurels, owners Terry and Stacey Caldwell are constantly looking at ways to improve and refine the dining experience for their customers.

As tastes and trends change, Porta Bella Restaurant has tried to evolve and grow along with those changes, while remaining true to their core values of offering high quality, properly prepared menu items at reasonable prices. A new menu has just been launched, offering a few new options and many favorites.

Although it is a dream to have a short seasonal menu, time has proven that the Battlefords prefer to enjoy a wide variety of menu options on a regular basis. Those looking for a great steak, a tender rack of ribs, Saskatchewan sourced Northern Pike or just a big juicy burger, will not be disappointed.

Their most recent change is the addition of weekend brunch. Offered Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m…. but don’t expect to come and order plain “ol” bacon and eggs.

“People are looking for interesting and healthy options for breakfast. Our new brunch menu offers a nice variety of breakfast/brunch options that even a typical breakfast diner will enjoy. It has been really well received so far,” said Terry.

Presentation and sourcing of local foods (AAA Canadian Beef, for example), while keeping it affordable, is also a big area where the Caldwell’s are going to put some emphasis.

“We want to keep costs down for our customers. We’ve tried to source out better ways to manage that. Our menu prices are more reflective of what you’d find in casual dining, but with a fine dining quality. And our plating has changed, we want it to be even more presentable. People want it to look as good as it tastes,” said Terry.

Their wine list is also something to be admired, as the Caldwells bring in a wine expert to help them select top-quality and affordable wines for their customers. Porta Bella uses the services of Doug Reichel of Doug Reichel Wine Marketing Inc, to help them choose delicious wines from all the major wine regions of the world.

Asked what keeps people coming back for so many years, Terry says it’s the overall consistent quality people have come to expect, the friendly atmosphere, the knowledgeable staff, and of course, the great food and drinks.
