Best Workout Facility : Pipes Fitness

Sep 20, 2017 | 9:00 PM

Pipes Fitness has created a family-like atmosphere that separates it from run-of-the-mill gyms around town and makes it much easier for members to stick with their workout routines.

When Miranda Wiese owner and head trainer at Pipes Fitness won Best Personal Trainer and Best Workout Facility at the inaugural Battleford’s Best of the Best (BOB) Awards. She attributed the win to the quality of professional exercise programming and the comradery created at her facility.

“We are a family,” Wiese said. “When you come in you are greeted by people that you know and if you miss a workout people are wondering if you’re OK. It definitely helps with the motivation to keep people on track.”

Wiese said workouts tend to be the the first thing people drop from their schedules when other distractions popup. She emphasized group based workouts create a higher commitment level and deter people from skipping their exercises

The studio offers a wide range of classes and anyone at any experience level is more than welcome. Wiese also has five years experience in physiotherapy and said she can help individuals with physical limitations participate.

“We are always able to modify exercises and work around issues, which are common.” Wiese said.

The biggest focus at Pipes Fitness is alignment, grounding, posture and training functionally with good technique, which improves day to day functionality and helps prevent injury. Wiese said there hasn’t been a single injury at the studio yet and attributes that to emphasis on proper form first.

She added Pipes doesn’t use generic programs, but trainers spend hours working on each class plan, and they are specifically developed with attending participants in mind. Trainers get to know and learn clients capabilities, strength and weaknesses, and use that to push them and modify when needed. Wiese said members will never do the same workout twice

“I see a lot of people come through here who have been going to the gym for years but have bad form, which is the most common way to get injured,” Wiese said.

Pipes Fitness has a wide range of classes from Adult and Teen Group Fitness, Power, Stretch and Restorative Yoga, Tiny Pipes, Small Pipes, Personal and Athlete Training.

Wiese said her favorite classes are her Tiny Pipes class which is for kids from age four to seven and her Small Pipes class which is for ages eight and up.

“Kids want to do what their parents do,” Wiese said. “They can’t go to the gym, so this is their time. It is also a confidence thing. I have seen lots of kids start out and they are really shy and once they get comfortable their confidence sky rockets.”

Wiese said the Small Pipes class might be the most important. The class is aimed at kids who aren’t particularly into sports, but are looking for something else to keep active.

“If you can catch them young and get technique into them early, (fitness) the gym could be their thing.”

Pipes also provides personal and athlete training. Wiese spent this summer working with North Star Blake Fennig, and NAIA running back Jacob Stynsky. She is the previous trainer of North Stars Connor Manegre, Troy Gerein and Colby Cave who is currently in the AHL.

Classes are available from early in the morning, to lunch time and after work. Wiese said unlike with a gym membership where members pay one fee which includes things they may never use, at Pipes members pay for the classes they plan on attending. Clients can also drop in, purchase punch cards, or choose from a variety of different memberships options pending level of attendance.

“Members can pay for just two classes a week, they can pay for more classes or they can get the unlimited membership and have access to every class we offer,” Wiese said.

Wiese added it takes a specific type of person to dedicate themselves to working out at a regular gym and invites anyone looking for a more serious commitment to getting into a exercise routine and being part of a family to try out Pipes Fitness.

Wiese has a BSc in Kinesiology and Certified Exercise Physiologist through CSEP, which is a gold standard in exercise science and personal training in Canada. She said the experience and knowledge gained during her five years working in a physiotherapy setting as an Exercise Therapist was a huge asset in providing exercise modifications and progressions, and help individuals with certain limitations participate in fitness.
