Robyn Silvernagle eyes up Scotties tournament

Sep 7, 2017 | 2:00 PM

Even though the Robyn Silvernagle rink dropped a 7-5 decision to Binia Feltscher of Switzerland on Wednesday at the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling Tour Challenge in Regina you won’t hear her complaining.

The North Battleford skip whose record is now 1-1 after two days of competition says the team views it as a learning experience.

“We had a shaky start last night but we were able to turn it around and make it close in the end,” Silvernagle said. “We took a lot of positives from the loss and the fact we were able to make Binia (Feltscher) throw her last rock for the win was huge.”

Silvernagle, who grew up in Biggar, began curling early in her life thanks to her mother who was close friends with another Biggar curler; former world and Olympic curling champion Sandra Schmirler.

“I began curling competitively when I was about 11,” Silvernagle added. “As a kid I was hanging at the curling rink with mom and that’s when the curling bug hit me.”

Now residing in North Battleford, Silvernagle is excited with the progress her team has made in the past year which included going 7-1 during the round robin portion of the 2017 Saskatchewan Scotties Tournament of Hearts. She lost in the final to Penny Barker on the final stone.

“That loss to Penny (Barker) was heartbreaking but again I look at it as a learning experience,” Silvernagle said. “Now we have our eye the ultimate prize and that is to go to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts and represent my province.”

Team Silvernagle has a different dynamic than the team that was one shot way from the provincial title in January with the departure of third Cristina Goertzen. The popular mate was replaced by veteran Jolene Campbell of Saskatoon and according to Silvernagle having her experience will benefit the team.

“Cristina and I were such great friends and travelled down many roads together and I am going to miss not seeing her every weekend,” Silvernagle added. “But our team was very excited to have Jolene (Campbell) say she wanted to join us and just having her knowledge of the game is huge for us.”

Silvernagle, Campbell, second stone Dayna Demers of Meadow Lake and lead Kara Thevenot play their third game of the Pinty’s Grand Slam this afternoon at 4:30 p.m. when they face Hannah Fleming (1-2) of Scotland.
