Quality start for Albers as Mariners beat Oakland

The resurrection of Andrew Albert’s major league baseball career continued this weekend.

The 31-year-old left-hander tossed six strong innings allowing just one earned run on one hit while striking out a season high five batters as the Seattle Mariners pounded the Oakland A’s 10-2 Sunday afternoon.

The product of North Battleford improved to 3-1 since acquired by the Mariners in a trade with the Atlanta Braves on Aug. 15. It was also the fourth straight game Albers has pitched five plus innings and his first quality start since 2013 where he allowed less than three runs in six complete innings of work.

The only blemish on Albers afternoon was a solo home-run by Matt Olsen in the sixth inning when the game was well in-hand.

It was a stark contrast from his last start on Aug. 27 when the M’s defence committed a franchise record five errors in the first inning against the New York Yankees handing Albers his first loss of the season.

More importantly for the Mariners (69-68), Albers mastery over the A’s enabled Seattle to gain one full game in the race for the American League Wild Card race.

Five teams, the Yankees, Minnesota Twins, Baltimore Orioles, L.A. Angels and Mariners are all in the hunt for the post season. New York leads the Twins by two games while the Twins lead Baltimore and the Angels by a game and half. Seattle is two and a half games back of Minnesota who has a game in hand on both L.A. And Seattle.

Albers next projected start is next weekend when the Mariners host Los Angeles in a three game series that could have huge playoff implications.
