Light of Christ opens new Learning Centre

Aug 31, 2017 | 9:54 AM

It was an exciting day for Light of Christ Catholic School Division Wednesday when the organization opened a new learning centre in North Battleford.

Located at 1202-105 St., the centre will host staff professional development, board meetings, and be a gathering place for students and the community.

“It’s a community-based building,” Light of Christ Catholic School Division Director of Education Cory Rideout said. “Our school division purchased it a year and a half ago with the intent of it becoming a professional development centre for the province.”

“We’ve had all kinds of requests to see the building, to rent the building. We want to make sure it is used for the right things, at the right times, by the people who need it most,” he added.

The building was previously owned by the local Knights of Columbus.

The division purchased the building for about $350,000 and renovated it for roughly $220,000, for a total project cost of roughly $570,000. The initiative was funded by the division alone as a capital project.

The facility includes a large auditorium, a boardroom, as well as a full kitchen.

Board chair Glen Gantefoer said the board started with a plan to turn the building into learning centre.

“There is all kinds of professional development that has to be provided to our teachers on an annual basis,” he said.

He said as a result of the province’s budget cuts, there is a limit to how much can be spent and the distance staff can travel for professional development adding this facility will fill the gaps.

“This facility would be a perfect place to attract teachers from all over the province to come here for professional development,” he said. “In the next year or so, we’ll see realistically what this building can provide for us. It’s limitless.”

The chair said Notre Dame Parish could use the space. Hosting Christmas concerts at the centre instead of taking school gymnasiums out of service is another idea Gantefoer brought up.

“We definitely want this facility to be a community-based facility – either for education or for parish community use,” he said.

Gantefoer said the facility also includes a parking lot which makes up for Notre Dame School’s lack of one.

In the meantime, the division has completed some improvements to its space at its central administration office at 9301-19 Ave. to provide additional office space.
