Bear visits Waskesiu bakery after smelling cinnamon buns

Jul 4, 2017 | 5:52 PM

A bear was looking for a little more than the necessities when it popped into a Saskatchewan bakery over the weekend.

The close encounter happened in Waskesiu, north of Prince Albert, after a batch of cinnamon buns came out of the oven at Waskesiu Trading Company Store and Bakery.

Baker Les Archer said he heard knocking on his back door and thought it was his mother, as she normally shows up around 5 a.m.

“I looked back there and (the bear’s) nose is just ready to pop in the back door,” Archer said. “I grabbed a stick actually and chucked it at him to get rid of him.”

This wasn’t the bear’s first time trying to grab a quick meal from the bakery. Archer said the animal was snooping around a few days earlier.

“He had broken my back cooler and for some reason macaroni salad seemed to be the thing to grab,” he said.

Archer has since bear-proofed his back cooler and has not seen the animal again since the weekend.

The baker didn’t mention what kind of bear was looking for snacks.
