Time for spring cleaning in N.B.

Apr 17, 2017 | 6:10 AM

Every year city administrators trade in their formal business wear for reflective vests and their keyboards for trash picks and head outside to pick up litter for the Earth Day Clean Up.

Two years ago, 4,095 kg of litter was collected during North Battleford’s annual clean up event. The amount that was nearly cut in half last year as 2,140 kg was collected. The city contributes the decline in litter to events like the annual cleanup, but is asking for the public’s help to keep the city looking great.

“What we have usually done with those who want to help out is ask them to contact my office,” city manager Jim Puffalt said. “We will see where we can allocate you to. Generally, we ask if you have a certain area of business that fronts onto Territorial Drive, it would be a great opportunity to pick up that litter and save us a great deal of time.”

Puffalt said the city is especially encouraging businesses and schools to clean up their own areas of the city. He added it is very rewarding because the difference is so visible.

“You can see the progress as you go,” Puffalt said. “When you start you’re looking at a full ditch and then by the time you are done it is completely clear of litter, so long as the wind isn’t howling. It is very rewarding.”

The city manager said it is important for the city to show leadership and prove it cares about how North Battleford looks, just as much as anyone else.

Puffalt was glad to say the total litter collected has gone down each year because programs like this have had a lasting effect on the city.
