New roof for theatre

Apr 5, 2017 | 5:00 PM

With the roof scheduled to be completed in the next couple of days, renovations on the new Magic Lantern Theatre in North Battleford will really start taking shape in the next few weeks.

The old Capitol Theatre was purchased by Magic Lantern Theatres on Feb. 17 and was shut down immediately for demolition and renovations.

John Hutchinson is overseeing the project.

“The roof is well underway and should be completed by tomorrow night at the latest,” Hutchinson said. “The floor in the back of the auditoriums was poured and laid yesterday for the new handicapped seating area and the handicapped bathrooms.”

Hutchinson said the roof getting sealed was the key before the inside of the theatre could really progress. There was a lot of water damage to the ceilings in both the auditorium and the lobby.

“The inside work can start now with the ceiling and putting insulation inside the walls,” Hutchinson said. “There is some water damage on the ceiling from the roof. It was no good trying to address that until the roof was sealed.”

Hutchinson added a new screen is being installed in the next few weeks as well. He said the old silver screen will not be retained in order to provide the state of the art cinema Magic Lantern has promised the city.

There is still no estimated time for when the theatre will open to the public.
