Ne-waza refers to fighting on the ground only, which is used only for beginners and young competitors, in this case aged 12 and under. Tachi-waza is fighting from the standing position but also uses ground techniques, and it’s used with more experienced and older fighters.

Leading the way for Battlefords was the Burton family, who had three kids take part: Sam, Nate and Kennedy.

Nate Burton won gold in the U-14 male under 42 kg and took home silver in the U-16 male under 42 kg, while Kennedy won gold in the U-18 female under 48 kg.

Sam competed in both the U-10 ne-waza under 20.9 kg and U-10 tachi-waza under 23.9 kg, and won gold in both because all participants in U-10 receive gold medals to encourage long term participation.

The Battleford club also got great performances from Vladamir Pristojko, who took home one gold and two silvers, and Bradley Byl, who won gold. Pristojko earned top spot in the U-14 under 46 kg male category, while finishing second in U-16 under 46 kg male category and the senior male under 100 kg category. Byl won his gold medal in the U-14 male 66+ kg category.

Pristojko’s older brother Slavko also won two bronze medals, one in the U-18 male under 55 kg and one in the senior male under 55 kg.

Youngsters Wyatt Freeman, Zaya Larson-Roy and Grady Stefanick also each won two gold medals each for participating in the U-10 and U-12 age categories.

Carson Weeks, Layla Seymour, Ridley Suberlak, Ewan Waggoner, and Adrian Deleanu all also each won one gold medal for particpating in a U-10 or U-12 category.

Following the competition on Saturday, there was also advanced training on Sunday morning with Olympian and four-time Canadian champion Amy Cotton, who represented Canada at the 2004 and 2012 summer Olympics.

The next competition on the Judo Sask calendar is on April 29, with a location still to be determined.
