Teen charged after Friday night crash in Regina

A major intersection in downtown Regina was blocked Friday night after a violent crash.

Regina police confirm they received a tip about a dangerous driver in the 2000 block of McDonald Street at 8:50 p.m.

“Moments later a call came in for a report of a hit and run in the intersection of Broad Street and 11th Avenue,” said Staff Sgt. Kelly Trithart.

He added once officers arrived, they responded to a crash two blocks south at the intersection of Broad Street and Victoria Avenue.

“The southbound driver hit a vehicle that had a man and a woman inside,” said Trihart. “They were sent to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

He said the vehicle then tried to leave heading west on Victoria Avenue, which is where police closed in.

The alleged driver, a 17-year-old boy who can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces a list of charges including two counts of driving while impaired causing harm, failure to provide a breath sample, dangerous operation of a vehicle, and failure to stop at the scene of an accident.

The teenager will appear in court on April 12.

WITNESS REACTIONS

A woman parked in front of the Ramada Hotel described the incident as something from a movie.

“All of a sudden cops came and then they all surrounded him and then there was guns and everything, and I don’t know if it was like a chase or what.”

Andres Roldan couldn’t agree more, describing it “like a scene from a Fast and the Furious movie.” 

“I was a passenger in a car that was in the left lane on Broad Street going northbound. The lights were red, and then all of a sudden I look to my right and I see this car come speeding up, crosses one part of Victoria, hits one car that was going eastbound and then the driver leaves that car there to try and turn around.”

Roldan said the driver tried to go westbound on Victoria Avenue but hit the median and the pole in the middle, causing the vehicle to be stuck. He said at that point the light went green, so his friend proceeded to drive.

“When I looked back the police were already there.”
