Youth accused of killing teen, taking selfie might testify
GREENSBURG, Pa. — A teenager who was shot in the face could have survived had he received immediate medical attention, a forensic pathologist testified Wednesday in the trial of the alleged shooter who’s also accused of taking a selfie of the dying teen and fleeing without seeking aid.
Dr. Cyril Wecht told Westmoreland County jurors that 16-year-old Ryan Mangan didn’t die immediately and “would have survived with appropriate medical care,” The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review (http://bit.ly/2lMfMSC ) reported.
“For 45 minutes to one hour he would have lived,” Wecht testified in the trial of Maxwell Morton, 18, who was 16 at the time of the February 2015 shooting and is charged with first-degree murder.
Ryan sustained a gunshot wound under his left eye and slowly suffocated as blood drained into his lungs, Wecht testified. But the wound itself caused no fatal brain or spinal injuries, he said.
