More than $24,000 in illegal outfitting and hunting activities fines were recently issued by the Ministry of Environment.

In one investigation dating back to 2013, a bull moose was poached on private land in the Eagle Creek area. A First Nations outfitter and his American client obtained an export permit for the set of moose antlers, but stated the animal was taken on First Nations land.

As a result, Daniel Shriver of West Virginia was fined $3,260 for unlawful hunting, unlawful possession and providing false information to a wildlife officer.

Steward Baptiste of Cando was fined $5,920 for outfitting without an outfitter’s licence endorsed for that activity and providing false information to a wildlife officer.

Baptiste was found guiding another American hunter years later and charged another $3,000.

In the Ministry of Environment’s second investigation, Brett Zeis of North Dakota was fined nearly $2,000 for offences including unlawful hunting.

George Keewatin of Kamsack, his guide, was fined $10,000 for unlawful guiding.

It was Keewatin’s second unlawful guiding conviction. He will be under certain hunting restrictions for five years.
