New events coming to Wintertainment Week

Feb 8, 2017 | 1:00 PM

Running for a third year, Wintertainment Week in the Battlefords is adding more events to make it even bigger than before.

The full week of activities has something for the entire community, according to Candace Dustan, program manager for the City of North Battleford.

“There’s something for adults and little, little kids and everybody in between,” Dustan said. “Most of the events are low cost or free of charge so it’s available for everybody. “

Included new this year is a family game night and a Saskatchewan Winter Games one year kick off.

“We’re going to have mascots, there’s a free burger barbecue. We’re going to do outdoor and indoor events. That one should be pretty busy I think,” Dustan said. “The other one that I’m really excited about is the Wintertainment Outdoor Classic. Initiation Hockey, through Battlefords Minor Hockey, is participating in two outdoor games at Connaught School. We’re having a free wiener roast and popcorn and other outdoor activities.”

Continuing from last year, there will be a snow pile sculpture contest running all week long. Dustan said she hopes the quality of sculptures stands up to the work done last year.

“People did really, really amazing things,” she said. “Most of them were in people’s yards which is nice to see in their front yards because people driving by can see them. There were dragons and sharks and it was really quite amazing.

“I just hope everybody has an opportunity to catch at least one event. It’s an affordable way for families to spend time together and for everybody to get up and get active.”

Wintertainment Week runs from Feb. 19 to Feb. 26, and will include other activities like sleigh rides, craft making, curling, and a chilli cook off.
