Council brings up naming rights for city’s Civic Centre

Feb 1, 2017 | 1:00 PM

North Battleford city council discussed the subject of naming rights during its meeting, Monday.

Coun. Kelli Hawtin asked whether the city had ever considered naming rights for the Civic Centre, as other cities with Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) teams, including the Estevan Bruins and Yorkton Teirriers, have a sponsor.

Estevan plays at Affinity Place, sponsored by Affinity Credit Union, and Yorkton plays at Farrell Agencies Arena, named after Farrell Agencies LTD., an insurance agency.

“It was just a question of curiosity if we had ever explored that option in naming the facilities that don’t currently have any names on them,” Hawtin said.

Buildings that are sponsored, including the Battlefords’ Credit Union CUplex that opened in 2012, bring in revenue for the city.

“I think it’s something that council would be open to in terms of an approach. I guess we’ll see if this discussion goes further,” mayor Ryan Bater said.

Right now, the subject is not on the agenda for Feb. 13’s meeting. Bater thinks the question might be raised at council when the city debates new facilities.

“This was a central focus of the campaign to raise local funds for the credit union CUplex facilities,” he said. “And when the city starts to discuss the replacement of the existing Civic Centre…this will obviously be part of the discussion as a means to help raise the funds.”
