AAA Stars still in hunt after wins over Argos

Jan 30, 2017 | 4:00 PM

The AAA Stars picked up two crucial wins over the weekend against the Notre Dame Argos, winning 6-1 and 3-0 to keep pace with a glut of other teams hunting down a playoff spot.

They currently sit in tenth in the standings, but are just one point out of the all-important eighth spot. They are also just three points out of sixth because six teams are separated by just three points.

“We can see that we can still even get to sixth in the standings with a couple of wins,” Stars head coach Jean Fauchon said on Monday. “We just went out, we were moving the puck well, everybody was on board, and good things just happened.

“We started to drive the net a little bit better. We had lots of traffic in front. We’ve been working on net drives and getting that person in front of the net.”

Fauchon said he has never seen the standings this close.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” he said. “The teams that we’re battling with for those remaining spots are playing well. The good thing is we play Yorkton twice so we can kind of take our destiny into our own hands against them.”

Yorkton is currently in seventh, two points ahead of Battlefords.

On Sunday, eight different goal scorers helped lift Battlefords to the victories, although rookie Adam Beckman stood out with five points in the two games.

Mackenzie Donovan and Jordan Mish also each had four points.

“Everybody stepped up,” Fauchon said. “Everybody was ready to go. We knew that we needed to win these games on the weekend if we wanted any chance at staying in the playoff hunt.”

Both goaltenders played well.

Joseph Young stopped a whopping 49 shots in Sunday’s shutout, while Lance Alm stopped 32 of 33 pucks thrown his way in Saturday’s win.

“Joe [Young] stood on his head yesterday for the shutout,” Fauchon said. “It was just a good overall team effort. We got everybody going – all 20 guys going this weekend, and it paid off for us.”

The next game for the Stars is Tuesday night at home against the Saskatoon Contacts, a team that isn’t in that mix because they sit in fourth place with a 22-10-0-3 record. That puts them 17 points ahead of Battlefords.

Puck drop on Tuesday is set for 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Centre.
