AAA Sharks overpowered by Prairie Fire

Jan 30, 2017 | 1:00 PM

The AAA Sharks were supposed to play twice this past weekend in Radisson against Melville, but poor ice conditions moved their games to Battleford Arena, where they fell twice to the Prairie Fire, 5-1 and 6-0.

The team got off to a quick start in Saturday’s contest, scoring just three minutes in on a power play thanks to Alyssa Roach. But a short-handed goal just three minutes later from Heather Fiske tied the game up and took the momentum back.

The second and third periods didn’t go as well for Battlefords, as they were outshot 35-19 in the final 40 minutes and gave up four third period goals, including an empty netter.

Sharks goaltender Chloe Burt was fantastic in the game, stopping 40 of 44 shots thrown her way.

In the rematch on Sunday, the Prairie Fire struck early, just 45 seconds into the game. They followed that up with three second period goals and eventually won the game 6-0.

The final shots on goal in Sunday’s game were 43-33 for Melville.

The Sharks are now 5-17-1-1 after these two losses, which is seven points back of the sixth place Notre Hounds, who they split games with last weekend.

There are just four games left in the regular season, and if the playoffs began today, the Prairie Fire would be the Sharks’ first round opponent. Melville has a record of 15-5-3-1, two points up on third place Prince Albert.

Battlefords has next weekend off and will hit the ice against the top-ranked Saskatoon Stars on Feb. 11 and 12.
