Several horses killed in collision with semi-trailer

Jan 26, 2017 | 11:00 AM

Several horses were killed following a collision with a semi-trailer early this morning along Highway 4 South near Cando.

Battlefords RCMP Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the collision occurred around 2:24 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 26.

The driver of the vehicle from Alberta was not injured, although his truck did sustain significant damage and is no longer operational. It’s not yet known how many horses were killed or whether visibility was a factor, as thick fog covered much of the region overnight.

“The investigation is continuing. We get a lot of calls from motorists saying horses and cattle are on Highway 4 both North and South. It is becoming a concern,” said Tremblay.

In October RCMP were also called to investigate a possible collision between a horse and a larger vehicle along Highway 4 North near Cochin.  RCMP were told that there were several horses on the road at that time and when they arrived they found an injured horse RCMP believed was hit by a commercial vehicle.

Sgt. Tremblay reminded motorists to use extreme caution when travelling along any stretch of highway in the dark.

“Animals like horses and cattle will make their way to the roadways looking for road salt, especially at this time of year,” added Tremblay. “Just slow down on the roads and be ready for anything.”
