Silvernagle continues to sweep away competition

Jan 25, 2017 | 5:07 PM

Four wins in 27 hours has been the story so far for North Battleford’s Robyn Silvernagle at the Viterra Scotties women’s provincial in Melville.

After four draws, Team Silvernagle is the only undefeated team.

The tournament began on Tuesday afternoon with an opening draw at 2 p.m., and since then, Team Silvernagle has managed wins over Team Anderson (7-6), Team Eberle (6-4), Team Schneider (6-5), and Team Barber (9-1).

Her rink is made up of her, Dayna Demers from Meadow Lake, Christina Goertzen from Saskatoon, and Kara Thevenot from Prince Albert.

“Couldn’t ask for anything better,” Silvernagle said in a phone interview immediately following her 9-1 win in draw four. “We’re just starting to peak at the right time so that definitely helps.

“To be able to go out and do this with some of your best friends, it’s pretty great. We know each other’s quirks and what works well for us so we can just feed of that and continue on.”

On Tuesday, Silvernagle had to begin the tournament by going up against Sherry Anderson and then Chantelle Eberle, who were the two top-ranked teams, according to the Canadian Team Ranking System.

Silvernagle said snagging those wins was a big confidence booster.

“To beat both of those teams and just kind of get our feet under us and feel in control, is awesome,” Silvernagle said. “Everything has been pretty close. A few key shots here and there have definitely helped.”

The first game against Anderson, Silvernagle said they were in control the entire game. Against Eberle it was neck and neck, but Silvernagle had a three-point leading heading into the tenth and Eberle only managed one with hammer. Against Schneider on Wednesday morning, Silvernagle managed to come away with a win in the 10th end.

In their fourth game, the turning point happened in the fourth end when Barber had an opportunity for multiple points and was trailing 2-0, but a great draw from Silvernagle made sure Barber only got one.

“We didn’t have hammer and I was drawing against four I believe,” Silvernagle recalled. “It could have been a five-ball. So it could have gone either way at that point. From there, the momentum was definitely on our side after that shot.”

Silvernagle then put up four in the fifth and three in the sixth to end the game after just six ends thanks to a 9-1 score.

Silvernagle said she loves the pressure of making a shot like the draw in that fourth end against Team Barber.

“It is amazing but as a skip, you know that that is what you’re there to do,” she said. “So you know you have that pressure and you can totally just feed off of it when you make it. I like it. I definitely like it.”

Silvernagle does not play on Wednesday evening in draw five, but will play at 2 p.m. on Thursday against Team Martin and at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday evening against Team Selzer.

Standings Update

Team Silvernagle is the only team still undefeated but Team Lawton isn’t far behind at 3-1.

Team Eberle is the only other team with a record above .500 at 2-1. Team Barber, Team Selzer and Team Martin are 2-2.

Meanwhile Team Barker is 1-2, while Team Anderson is a surprising 0-3, as is Team Schneider.
