Youth programs receive city funding grants

Organizations geared towards helping youth in the Battlefords were given the green light by council to receive continued funding in 2017.

During Monday’s council meeting, the city approved a total of $87,557 of funding towards seven organizations under the Community Development Financial Assistance program. These grants are given out every year to organizations which apply for them.

The Battlefords Concern for Youth program received $25,000, which was $10,000 less than they requested.

“They provide a service that social services sees value in: outreach. Their outreach staff are on the street and working with troubled youth every day,” said David Gillan, director of finance.

As for the Boys and Girls Club, it applied for $25,000, for which they received the full amount.

“The Boys and Girls Club rely extensively on grants and donations, most unsecured beyond one-year arrangements,” Gillan said. “Their ability to plan and project is limited as grants come and go with regularity, even the National Boys and Girls Club grants themselves. They do not have any core funding, which is surprising.”

The Boys and Girls Club essentially have to start from scratch each year in terms of funding to operate. Unlike other organizations, they do not receive funding from the province. They instead rely on fundraising throughout the year to pay for administrative and organizational costs. Gillan suggested the club recieve an additional $5,000 grant to help seek out core funding, which was also approved by council.

City manager Jim Puffalt said they believe the club is a tremendous organization, and the city appreciates the work they do and were happy to supply the funding.

Some of the other organizations receiving grants are the Battlefords and Area Sexual Assault Centre, which will receive $8,600 and the Battlefords Allied Arts Council which will receive $8,450.
