Disc golf players braving the weather for fundraiser

Jan 13, 2017 | 2:51 PM

Disc golf club members in the Battlefords are braving the cold and snow to help feed the hungry in their community.

First organized in 2015, and slightly more established in 2016, members of the Battlefords Community Disc Golf Club are working to increase membership and awareness. In an effort to do that, they’re holding their first annual Ice Bowl on Jan. 22, playing to raise money and food donations for the Battlefords Food Bank.

Evan Zimmer, president of the club, said that feeding the hungry is the theme of other Ice Bowls, which are held all over Saskatchewan and across North America.

“Everybody from respective communities, they select their food bank of choice or charity of choice that has to do with feeding the hungry. We basically donate everything that we get between the money from the players, entry fees and any other way we can raise money and non-perishable food donations from participants” Zimmer said.

This is the first event of its kind for the club after getting off the ground in 2015. Around 20 to 30 people are expected at the event, including some players from Regina and Saskatoon.

“We’d just like to raise as much money as possible as we can. In a lot of ways, the competition amongst disc golf clubs is to see who can raise the most money for their respective charities. I suppose for us, we’re going to be competing against Saskatoon and Danielson Park,” Zimmer said, referring to other Ice Bowls in the Saskatchewan this winter. “But at the same time we’re all supporting each other.”

All ages are welcome to either join the club or play in the Ice Bowl, with club players as young as five and as old as 65. Club membership is free and there’s a $20 entry fee for the upcoming charity event.

Spectators are encouraged to bring out money or food donations for the food bank, and Zimmer assured that the weather conditions are looking favourable, considering the minus 40 temperatures the Battlefords have endured recently.

The Battlefords Ice Bowl 2017 is being held on Jan. 22 at Centennial Park, with registration starting at 10 a.m. and tee off at 11 a.m.
