Homan staves off elimination

It was win or go home in the 8 a.m. draw between Team Homan of Ottawa, and Team Sidorova of Russia, with Homan living to face another match.

It was a close game at 3-2 in favor of Homan after four ends, but the reigning champions blew the score wide open in the fifth end, scoring four points on the final rock from Homan, taking a commanding 7-2 lead which they never relinquished. The final score was 8-3. Homan now faces Team Muilleur of Manitoba at 3 p.m. in another elimination matchup, as both squads have a 1-2 record.

The defending men’s champions, Team Epping out of Ontario, were eliminated from the tournament, falling 8-3 to Team Botcher from Alberta.

The local team from Saskatoon, skipped by Steve Laycock, kept their tournament hopes alive by eliminating Team Balsdon of Ontario 6-4. Laycock will play for a spot in the playoffs at 8 p.m. against the loser of the Thomas and Schuster match. 

Heading back to the women’s side, Team Hasselborg of Sweden beat Team Sheidegger of Alberta and will now play Team Englot of Winnipeg in the “B” event for a spot in the playoffs. The loser will head to the “C” event in a win or go home game. As for Team Sheidegger, they have a “C” match up against team Einarson. Team Roque of Edmonton narrowly beat Team Bingyu of China 4-3 and will remain on the “B” side to have a date with Team Flaxey of Ontario for a spot in the playoffs. Bingyu heads to the “C” bracket and will play Fleury in an elimination game at 3 p.m.  

The 11:30 am draw pits Team Korte versus Team Carruthers in an elimination match while Team Gushue will face Team McEwen, Team Koe goes head to head with Team Morris and Team Thomas will tackle Team Shuster. All “B” matches where the winner will go on to the playoffs and the losers will get a chance at redemption. In the only women’s game, Jennifer Jones and her team will take on Jacqueline Harrison’s squad in a “B” bracket match.
