N.B. partners with BATC to help boost economy

The city is partnering up with the Battlefords Agency of Tribal Chiefs (BATC) to find ways for regional Indigenous people to access North Battleford’s businesses and facilities, which will in turn help boost the city’s economy.

The Joint Municipal Community Economic Development Initiative is still in its infancy, but North Battleford Mayor, Ryan Bater, said he has high hopes the program will be successful.

“We have a lot of surrounding First Nation’s around the urban centre of the Battlefords,” Bater said. “It is really important for us to come together and develop a plan to discover where we can work together for mutual benefit. We are talking about reserves that are only 20 minutes away and a lot of those people come to the city to shop and work. Our economic futures are intertwined.”

In a resolution passed by council at the Dec. 12 meeting, council and the BATC have committed to a series of meetings where they will develop ideas and come up with some concrete plans to move forward.

Bater reiterated the initiative is in its very early stages.

“Right now we are just dealing with the broad brush strokes,” Bater said. “Both parties are interested and both parties want to work together. We have yet to establish concrete projects or develop what results we are expecting to get out of this.”

Bater said the main point of the initiative to ensure the economy of the city is healthy. He added this is a three-year process as both sides want to be methodical and deliberate because they want projects to be tangible in order to see “real measurable benefit.”
